Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticized the Delhi and West Bengal governments for not implementing the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, stating that “political interests” are preventing citizens from accessing the benefits. He expressed disappointment, saying this decision deprives elderly citizens in these states of critical health support. The remarks came as PM Modi extended the scheme to include all senior citizens aged 70 and above across the nation.
On Dhanvantari Jayanti, marking the ninth Ayurveda Day, PM Modi extended Ayushman Bharat, his government’s flagship health insurance program, to benefit those aged 70 years and older. The expansion aims to provide the elderly with free hospital treatment and improved access to quality healthcare. The ‘Ayushman Vaya Vandana’ card, issued under the scheme, will allow senior citizens to receive healthcare services without financial strain.
“People aged above 70 will now get free treatment in hospitals," PM Modi said, highlighting that the initiative fulfills his earlier campaign promise. However, he expressed regret that residents in Delhi and West Bengal won’t be able to take advantage of this benefit.
PM Modi voiced his disappointment over the exclusion of elderly citizens in Delhi and West Bengal, stating, “I apologize to all the elderly aged above 70 years of Delhi and West Bengal that I cannot serve them.” He emphasized that, due to state governments’ reluctance to implement Ayushman Bharat, elderly individuals in these states will miss out on free medical treatment, despite the program’s wide reach elsewhere in the country.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of providing accessible healthcare, particularly for vulnerable senior citizens. He stated that the Ayushman Bharat expansion is a crucial step toward reducing the financial burden on families needing urgent medical care for their elderly members.
PM Modi explained that while the central government has been successful in implementing Ayushman Bharat in most states, the decision by Delhi and West Bengal governments to withhold the program limits health benefits for a significant portion of their populations.
During the same event, PM Modi inaugurated several developmental projects worth over ₹12,850 crore, signaling his government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across India. These projects align with the national vision of accessible healthcare and demonstrate the government’s dedication to creating a healthier future for all Indians.
The extension of Ayushman Bharat reflects PM Modi’s commitment to enhancing support for senior citizens, ensuring they receive essential healthcare services. He highlighted that during the 2024 general elections, he had promised to include individuals over 70 in the program, a pledge now realized.
As the government expands Ayushman Bharat to benefit senior citizens, PM Modi’s appeal underscores the importance of putting aside political differences to ensure citizens have equal access to essential services. He called for collaborative efforts between central and state governments, emphasizing that healthcare is a fundamental right that transcends political divides.
