The deadline for filing nominations in Maharashtra has ended, but ambiguity remains regarding approximately 15 seats across the state. The ruling alliance comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has yet to confirm candidates for four of these seats. On the other hand, the Opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)—including the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP, and the Congress—has also not finalized candidates for 11 seats.
The ruling BJP has put forward 152 candidates, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction has selected 52, and Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde has nominated 80 candidates, including seats reserved for smaller allies. The BJP allocated four seats to its smaller allies, while Shiv Sena reserved two for theirs.
Within the MVA coalition, the Congress has nominated 103 candidates, while the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar have both committed to 87 candidates. Although Sharad Pawar confirmed that the NCP’s final list stood at 87, there remains speculation around the allocation of 11 seats.
The ongoing indecision is partly due to seat-sharing challenges involving smaller allies, including the Samajwadi Party, with no definitive clarity on the distribution of these 11 seats. This indecision within the opposition camp follows weeks of internal negotiations and disagreements.
This period of uncertainty has also led to an increase in party members breaking away to contest independently. A prominent example is Nawab Malik from Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, who submitted nominations from the Mankhud seat both as an Independent and as an NCP member. The party eventually backed Malik just minutes before the deadline, illustrating the internal rifts within the alliance.
In an unexpected development, BJP spokesperson Shaina NC is now running from the Mumbadevi seat on a Shiv Sena ticket, adding another layer of complexity to the election dynamics. Despite her official nomination, some BJP members continue to show interest in contesting the Mumbadevi seat, signaling an unusual level of intra-party competition.
The lack of clarity regarding these 15 seats highlights the internal struggles and shifting alliances within both the ruling and opposition camps in Maharashtra. As the parties inch closer to the election date, the final candidate announcements will likely influence voter perception and the broader political landscape in the state.
