In a crucial development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to three out of five key demands raised by protesting junior doctors. This included the removal of two senior health officials and Kolkata’s Police Chief. The police chief of the north zone, responsible for the area where a shocking rape-murder occurred, will also be removed. Protests are expected to continue until formal orders are issued.
After the meeting, Banerjee commented, "The meeting was positive... 99% of the doctors' demands have been met." She urged doctors to end their protests, especially due to the condition of patients affected by floods. However, the junior doctors have stated their protest will persist until concrete actions follow.
While acknowledging the government’s acceptance of their demands, the doctors remain cautious. A Junior Doctors' Forum representative stressed that verbal assurances need formal actions. They also reiterated their goal to eliminate corruption in the hospital system.
Banerjee pledged a ₹100 crore upgrade to hospital infrastructure and confirmed that senior health officials would be transferred, noting that the decision was due to a lack of trust by the students, not punitive measures.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal will step down after Durga Puja, following allegations of evidence tampering in the August 9 rape-murder case. The CBI, probing the case, arrested a hospital principal and a police officer for their roles in the investigation.
The two-hour meeting, described as the "fifth and final invitation for talks," took place at Banerjee’s residence. Following the discussion, 40 doctors signed the official minutes.
The protests began after the rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The prime suspect, a civic volunteer, was arrested, but the investigation revealed several lapses, drawing nationwide condemnation and leading to widespread protests.
The CBI continues its probe, with the arrest of hospital principal Sandip Ghosh for evidence tampering. The courts have raised serious concerns over the delayed FIR and inconsistencies in the post-mortem report, fueling public outrage.
