The investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is being handled by the CBI. West Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday issued a fresh appeal to junior doctors protesting over the incident. Pant urged the doctors to attend a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at 5 pm.

Pant also restricted the delegation size to 15 doctors and confirmed the CM’s presence during the talks. Earlier, the doctors had sought a live telecast of the meeting and demanded a delegation of 30 representatives.
On Tuesday, the state government had written to the doctors and sought a meeting. Meanwhile, the doctors continued with their protests despite a Supreme Court diktat which directed them to return to duty by September 10 evening. The doctors said while they received an e-mail from the government, it was sent by the Health Secretary, whose removal they are demanding.
The doctors have been staging a sit-in outside the West Bengal Health Department’s office in Salt Lake. They have been demanding justice for the trainee doctor whose body was discovered with injuries on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College. Their agitation, which has paralyzed healthcare services at state-run hospitals, has now entered its 34th day.
