The Jammu region has faced a surge of terrorist attacks believed to be carried out by newly infiltrated militant groups.
Sources indicate that while the 'People's Anti-Fascist Front' claimed responsibility for earlier terrorist attacks in Poonch-Rajouri, the 'Kashmir Tigers' have taken credit for the more recent incidents in Doda-Kathua. Both of these factions are believed to operate under the umbrella of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
These terrorists are described as highly trained and motivated, with some possibly having combat experience in Afghanistan. There are suspicions that former Pakistani Army soldiers might be among them. This year alone, six attacks attributed to these groups have resulted in the deaths of 11 Armed Forces personnel. Additionally, nine civilians lost their lives when a bus was attacked in Reasi last month.
Since October 2021, the Jammu region has been targeted by a series of precise terrorist attacks, leading to nearly 40 Army personnel deaths before the recent spike in violence. Initially, the attacks were concentrated near the Line of Control in the Poonch-Rajouri sector, but they have since spread deeper into areas like Doda, Kathua, and Reasi.
A security officer in Jammu and Kashmir noted that this latest batch of terrorists operates in small, stealthy groups and avoids technology and public contact. Their tactics and weaponry are similar to those used by the earlier infiltrators, suggesting a shared training background. The involvement of Pathan fighters from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who have previously fought with the Taliban, is also considered likely.
Both the Poonch-Rajouri and Doda-Kathua-Reasi terrorist groups use body cameras to record their attacks, producing propaganda videos with sophisticated English subtitles and literary quotes. Despite intense counter-operations by security forces, these terrorists remain elusive, often vanishing into dense forests after attacks. Their ability to avoid detection and their operational efficiency have made tracking and neutralizing them challenging for security agencies.
Instances of terrorists ambushing security forces, looting weapons, and bulletproof jackets have added to the difficulties faced by the Armed Forces. Local support is suspected, as the terrorists receive precise information about security movements and manage to sustain themselves in remote areas without detection.
Efforts to apprehend these terrorist groups continue, but the complex terrain and their guerrilla tactics make it a daunting task for the security forces.
