Mumbai Water Crisis: BMC Initiates Water Cuts Due to Severe Rain Shortage
Rephrased Description: Mumbai is grappling with a severe water crisis as rainfall remains scarce and temperatures soar. Since the start of May, the city has received only 3.7mm of rainfall, which is 59% below the usual 9mm. In response, BMC officials announced on May 25 the implementation of water cuts to mitigate the looming scarcity.
To conserve every drop of water, a 5% reduction in water supply will be enforced from May 30, doubling to 10% by June 5.
BMC's announcement, made on X (formerly Twitter), stated, "As a precautionary measure, BMC has decided to implement a 5% water cut in the Mumbai Metropolitan City (BMC jurisdiction) from Thursday, May 30, 2024, and a 10% water cut from Wednesday, June 5, 2024."
Currently, Mumbai's reservoirs hold only 140,202 million litres of water, far below the annual demand of 14,47,363 million litres, primarily due to reduced rainfall in October 2023.
In an effort to alleviate the situation, BMC is relying on additional water supply from the Bhatsa Dam and Upper Vaitarna Dam. However, this diversion of water may affect neighbouring regions like Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation, and their surroundings.
While there are forecasts for isolated rainfall or thundershowers between May 25 and 30, offering temporary relief, the city awaits the arrival of the southwest monsoon, expected around June 10 to 11. BMC urges residents to use water judiciously as they monitor depleting water resources closely
