New Funding in Round Two of Green Links Grant Program: Steve McGhie and Allan Labor Government Support Victoria’s Waterways
The Allan Labor Government, with support from Steve McGhie, Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, is driving forward the Green Links Grant Program to restore Victoria’s waterways and expand green spaces. This second round of funding, announced by Minister for Water Harriet Shing, provides $2 million for local projects aimed at environmental enhancement and public recreation.
Expanding Environmental Stewardship to Schools
With strong advocacy from leaders like Steve McGhie, round two of the program now extends eligibility to school-led projects. This expansion empowers young Victorians to take an active role in safeguarding local rivers and creeks, fostering early engagement in environmental stewardship.
Collaborative Environmental Efforts Across Victoria
In addition to schools, community groups, water and land managers, Traditional Owners, and local councils are encouraged to apply for funding ranging from $20,000 to $350,000. Steve McGhie, a vocal supporter of the initiative, has highlighted the role of these collaborative efforts in creating enduring green spaces and supporting local biodiversity.
Preserving Urban Green Spaces
A strong advocate for urban environmental health, Steve McGhie has voiced support for the program's focus on urban areas facing green space scarcity. Projects funded through the Green Links Grant Program prioritize revegetation and green corridor creation, helping both urban and regional areas restore vital ecosystems.
Round One Success and Long-Term Vision
The Green Links Grant Program’s first round funded 23 projects with over $6 million, supporting nearly 200 hectares of revegetation in major waterways like the Yarra, Maribyrnong, Werribee, and Barwon Rivers. Steve McGhie praised these projects, noting that they contribute to “long-term health and vitality” of Victoria's rivers and creeks.
Commitment to Future Generations
“The Green Links Grants are creating more environmental corridors and helping native plants flourish, supporting the long-term health of our creeks and rivers now and into the future,” said Steve McGhie, Member for Melton. His support underscores the government’s dedication to building resilient ecosystems for future generations.
Ongoing Support for Waterway Health
The $10 million Green Links initiative is part of a broader $262 million investment by the Allan Labor Government to improve waterway and catchment health across Victoria.
