For the first time this year, Bandi Chhor Divas was organized with great pomp and enthusiasm at the Parliament House in Melbourne. The hard work and dedication of Jasleen Bajaj and Nancy Gupta played an important role in making this historic event a success. Due to their efforts, this important Sikh festival was celebrated at a prestigious place like the Parliament House, which is a matter of pride for the Sikh community. The program started with Shabad Kirtan of Gurbani, which spread peace and spirituality in the entire atmosphere. After the Kirtan, the chief guests were welcomed by tying a traditional Sikh turban, which is a symbol of respect and pride in Sikhism. The event showcased the contribution of the Sikh community in Melbourne and the importance of their religious festivals.
Bandi Chhor Divas is an important festival of Sikhism, which is celebrated on the day of Diwali. Although Diwali is primarily known as a Hindu festival, it has special significance in the Sikh community. It is celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas in Sikhism because on this day the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Hargobind Sahib, was released from prison by the Mughals. From the 20th century, it came to be officially called Bandi Chhor Divas by Sikh religious leaders.
Bandi Chhor Divas has a deep and inspiring history in Sikh history. This festival symbolizes the bravery and sense of justice of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Mughal emperor Jahangir imprisoned Guru Hargobind Sahib along with 52 other kings in the Gwalior Fort. At that time, the Gwalior Fort was used as a prison for opponents of the Mughals and people considered dangerous to them. Guru Hargobind Sahib was also imprisoned by Jahangir for this reason.
However, later Jahangir realized his mistake and ordered the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib. But Guru Sahib clearly stated that he would go out of the prison only when 52 other imprisoned kings were also released along with him. For this, a special chola (cloth) was prepared, which had 52 buds, so that every king could go out by holding one bud. In this way Guru Sahib ensured not only his own, but also the freedom of other kings.
The day of Guru Hargobind Sahib's release and arrival in Amritsar was on the day of Diwali. To welcome him, fireworks were done in Amritsar, the whole city was lit up with the light of diyas, and Sikh warriors demonstrated their war skills. This scene was filled with enthusiasm and pride in the whole city. From then on, the Sikh community started celebrating this day as Bandi Chhor Divas.
Even today, the Sikh community celebrates Diwali as Bandi Chhor Divas, which not only symbolizes religious faith but also conveys the message of triumph of justice, freedom and humanity.
