NEW DELHI: The state of Telangana has been hit hard by heavy rains, leading to the submergence of over 100 villages and the cancellation of 99 trains. The situation prompted Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to hold an emergency meeting to assess the situation. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed on the directive of the central government. Additionally, all schools in Hyderabad have been closed, and a red alert has been issued for several districts until Monday morning.
In a tragic turn, a woman lost her life, and three others are feared to have been swept away in separate incidents related to the torrential downpour in Mahabubabad and Khammam districts. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar reported that 9 people are stranded on Prakash Nagar hillock, 68 on Azmeera Thanda hillock in Palair, and 42 others are trapped atop buildings.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy convened an emergency meeting to review the ongoing crisis. He connected with ministers and officials, including Bhatti Vikramarka, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, and Jupalli Krishna Rao, to discuss relief measures for the submerged regions. District Collectors, SPs, and other key department heads were instructed to conduct field visits to assess the damage and expedite relief operations.
In anticipation of more heavy rainfall, all primary and secondary schools in Hyderabad, whether government, aided, or private, will remain closed on September 2 as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of children.
The Met Centre has issued a red alert for parts of Telangana, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, and Mahabubnagar districts. The alert will remain in place from 1:00 PM Sunday until 8:30 AM Monday.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar confirmed that nine NDRF teams have already been dispatched to the flood-hit areas, with teams from Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Assam leading the rescue operations. In a post on social media platform X, Kumar emphasized the importance of coordination among rescue teams to ensure efficient relief efforts.
The situation remains critical, with ongoing rescue operations and the threat of more heavy rains looming over the state.
