In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed, "PM @narendramodi emplanes for USA to participate in the 6th Quad Leaders' Summit and to address the UN 'Summit of the Future.'"
Details of the Quad Leaders' Summit
PM Modi will participate in the sixth Quad Leaders' Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden in his hometown on September 21. The Quad, which includes India, Australia, Japan, and the United States, is committed to working as a force for global good and supporting an open, free, and inclusive Indo-Pacific that is prosperous and resilient. India is set to host the Quad Leaders' Summit in 2025.
Agenda for the Quad Leaders' Summit
The leaders will review the progress made by the Quad over the past year and set the agenda for the upcoming year to help the Indo-Pacific region achieve its development goals and aspirations. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the Quad Summit has been held in various formats since 2021, with the first meeting conducted virtually, followed by several in-person and virtual gatherings.
Addressing the 'Summit of the Future'
During his US visit, PM Modi will also address the 'Summit of the Future' at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23. The summit, themed 'Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,' is considered a pivotal event in the UN's history as it approaches its 80th anniversary in 2025. A large number of global leaders are expected to attend, making it a significant platform for discussing the future of multilateralism.
Bilateral Meetings and Community Engagement
Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines of the summit to discuss issues of mutual interest. He is also scheduled to address the Indian community in New York on September 22. India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership covering almost all areas of human endeavor, driven by shared democratic values and a convergence of interests. The two countries have robust people-to-people contacts and conduct extensive military exercises, which are increasing in scale and complexity. The US remains India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods and services amounting to USD 190.1 billion in 2023.
Importance of the Quad Partnership
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that the Quad event would provide PM Modi with an opportunity to thank both US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for their leadership. He noted that the event could be seen as a farewell for both leaders as they have significantly contributed to giving momentum and importance to the Quad partnership. PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of Japan and Australia, further strengthening ties among the Quad nations.
