Ibrahim Qubaisi, the head of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile units, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed his demise, stating that Qubaisi had been instrumental in shaping Hezbollah's missile capabilities for decades. This targeted strike comes on the heels of severe cross-border confrontations, during which Hezbollah fired around 300 rockets at northern Israeli cities, including Haifa, Safed, and Nazareth. Air raid sirens sounded throughout the Galilee region in response to the barrage.
In addition to Qubaisi, the IDF reported the elimination of at least two other senior Hezbollah commanders in the airstrike. These individuals were critical to the group’s missile operations, which have increasingly posed a significant threat to Israel's security. Hezbollah confirmed Qubaisi's death, referring to him as a martyr “on the road to Jerusalem,” a phrase they use to honor fighters killed by Israeli forces.
A seasoned member of Hezbollah, Qubaisi joined the organization in the 1980s. Throughout his tenure, he led various missile and rocket units, including those involved in precision-guided missile technology. His strategic role in Hezbollah's military operations against Israel was significant, and he maintained strong connections with senior military officials within the group.
Qubaisi was a pivotal figure in Hezbollah’s 2000 Mount Dov operation, which involved the kidnapping of three Israeli soldiers. The soldiers were later discovered deceased, and their remains were returned in a 2004 prisoner swap. His involvement in this high-profile incident solidified his reputation within Hezbollah’s military apparatus.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the airstrike in Dahiyeh also resulted in the deaths of six civilians and injured 15 others. This incident is part of a larger escalation that has claimed hundreds of lives in Lebanon recently, primarily due to Israeli airstrikes.
The missile exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel have intensified following the eruption of violence during the Gaza war that began in October 2023. Concerns are rising that this conflict could escalate into a comprehensive war across multiple fronts in the Middle East, potentially involving Iran-backed factions from Yemen and Iraq.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that Lebanon is teetering on the brink of disaster. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden urged both sides to de-escalate the situation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, remains resolute, asserting that Israel will persist in targeting Hezbollah’s military installations in Lebanon. "We will continue to hit Hezbollah," Netanyahu proclaimed, emphasizing that any shelter harboring missiles would be destroyed.
