Washington: On Wednesday, Donald Trump raised doubts about whether Democrat Kamala Harris is truly Black or using her race for political gain, in an interview that caused a stir in the 2024 presidential race.
"She was always identified with her Indian heritage, and she predominantly emphasized that. I didn't even realize she was Black until a few years ago when she suddenly started identifying as Black," Trump stated during a discussion with interviewers at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago.
"And now she wants to be recognized as Black. So I’m unsure, is she Indian or is she Black?" he commented about Harris, who holds the distinction of being the first Black, female, and South-Asian vice president in US history.
"I respect either identity, but it seems she doesn’t, because she was all about being Indian and then abruptly shifted to being Black," Trump added.
These controversial remarks by the Republican presidential candidate are the latest in a series of escalating personal attacks on Harris. They come on the heels of Trump’s recent comments accusing Harris, who is married to a Jewish-American, of being anti-Semitic.
The White House under President Joe Biden quickly condemned Trump’s comments, labeling them as "insulting."
"No one has the right to dictate someone’s identity or how they choose to identify," said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the first Black woman to hold the role, during a press briefing.
