Starting August 5, a new weight loss medication, Wegovy, will become available in Australian pharmacies. This drug, similar to the well-known Ozempic, contains the same active ingredient, Semaglutide, and is used for managing chronic weight conditions.
Wegovy, a weight loss drug akin to Ozempic, will be on sale in Australian pharmacies starting next week. Both Wegovy and Ozempic, produced by Novo Nordisk, feature Semaglutide, a compound that mimics a gut hormone to curb appetite and manage hunger.
Unlike Ozempic, which is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is specifically designed to address chronic weight issues and is administered via a once-weekly pen with a higher dosage of Semaglutide.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration approved Wegovy in 2022 for weight loss in individuals categorized as obese or overweight, in conjunction with exercise and a calorie-restricted diet. This will be its first availability in Australia.
However, Wegovy will not be covered by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and pricing details remain undisclosed. In the U.S., the medication is priced at approximately US$1349.02 (AU$2064.23) for a 28-day supply.
This launch follows a shortage of Ozempic, which Novo Nordisk has indicated will persist through 2024. Additionally, in May, the Australian government prohibited the sale of unregulated versions of Ozempic due to concerns about severe side effects, including nerve damage, bleeding gums, severe diarrhea, vomiting, and rashes.
